Yes, I agree with everyone else. "Up, Simba" was a painfully long article. I started it about 4 or 5 times over the break but could never finish it. And judging by the amount of hands that went up yesterday in class and most of the other posts, we were all kind of in the same boat. Although it was very long, a few things and Wallace’s style did stand out.
I liked his tone. He wrote with authority and used a really nice range of words. He spoke commonly and didn’t try to make it super fancy. I like that. I also noticed he uses italics like Shepherd. Wallace is also a very good storyteller. When he tells of John McCain’s time as a prisoner of war, I get such a clear picture. I could see a young John McCain sitting in a cell, wounded, picking at the wall.
Another high point for me was some of Wallace’s comments regarding the Vietnam War. This one really stood out – “The fact is that John McCain is a genuine hero of maybe the only kind Vietnam has to offer us, a hero because of not what he did, but what he suffered- voluntarily for a Code.” I think this is a very interesting observation and one that might even apply to our film essay.
