A subtle form of rhetoric that I noticed was the Vietnamese "escort" came up to him to offer him her "services" in FMJ.
The girl wasn't stupid, she saw American Marines and knew that she could get something out of them by offering them what they couldn't resist. Why would they say no? Here are two, lonely American soldiers who a) have money to spend and b) are so far away from home and need the comfort of a woman. The only obstacle she faced is that Joker was not easily influenced and could not be taken for an idiot.
At the beginning of the movie we learned that Joker stands up for what he believes in. A good example of this is when he would not give into Senior Drill Instructor forcing him to worship the Virgin Mary. He proved that he has courage and therefore he is the one that makes the rules.
This leads us to the escort approaching him and his partner and asks if they have a "girlfriend" in Vietnam to which he responds, "Not just this minute." This is a smart move of his part because if he had said yes, well the deal would be off but if he had said no then she would have taken it as if he was lonely, desperate and willing to pay anything. To me, his response came off as if he was open for negotiation...it says, "What do you have in mind?"
After this, she lets them know that she charges $15 for her services.
Joker: "$15 for both of us?"
Escort: "No, $15 each one,"
Joker: $15 too expensive. $5?
Escort: But I will love you long time
Joker: $5 is all my momma will allow me to spend.
Escort: (gives in) Ok, $10 each.
This example of rhetoric takes me back to how the book Thank You for Arguing talks about the art of Seduction. He gave an example of how Henry Kissinger used persuasive methods on President Nixon. Kissinger would lay out 5 alternatives, the most extreme choices in the beginning and end and then his preferred choice in the middle....which leads the person to believe that the middle option is not as bad as the beginning and last option.
So the prostitute laid out her top price, $15, and Joker laid out his extreme price which he knew she would not give into, $5. This led her to settle for $10 because that was better than not getting paid at all. So in the end, she was happy to have made some profit and he was happy that he wouldn't have to pay too much.
