Geez Directors are smart

While reading thank you for arguing, I was suprised how I actually read what was assigned in one sitting. It was interesting and I learned a lot as well. It really touched base on Ethos, pathos, and logos and how to use them in an argument. It also did a great job explaining that you may not always with the argument, but if you get what you want then that's all you need. His examples with his son were quite fun, but not always realistic. This book helped make it very clear, but when it came to 'Writing in the Movies' it really made me think about Platoon and Full Metal Jacket. I didn't realize how important camera angles were until after reading this article. I began to think about Full Metal Jacket and began to appreciate the director that much more because he always had the anlges in mind. From the close ups on Pyle's eyes to the parallel linesin the baracks, they all play a strong role in getting the messages behind them. It showed that Pyle has lost his mind and the structure of the boot camp and how they are viewed as equals. These are both key points that would only have been fully expressed by the way the director used his handy camera. I now see why directing takes such work because a lot of thought has to go into this process.
