Hearts and Minds
For some reason I watched Maya Lin and thought that was the movie for this week...I don't know why I thought that. But then I watched Hearts and Minds. It was a very eye opening experience to see our role in the war from a different perspective. It is ridiculous that we always think we are the good guys and we are the heros who save so many lives when that is not the case at all, in fact, it's the opposite. This movie depicted American soldiers as careless individuals who were only doing their "job." When the pilots were talking about dropping bombs in the villages that it was easy and not that big of a deal because they couldn't see the blood or hear the people crying. This documentary was very disturbing for me because it really showed how evil people can be and it is horrible to think that these kind of people are on our team and think they are such good people. It is ironic that the name of this documentary is "Hearts and Minds" because it shows just the opposite for the American soldiers, they were heartless and didn't show any sympathy for the Vietnamese. However, the documentary dived really deep into the hearts and minds of the Vietnamese and showed us as Americans something that we had never seen before. We were the bad guys and this is so unusual and shocking to us because we are never the bad guys.
